High demand, pork prices continue to increase

The supply of pork in 2019 provided by enterprises or processing farms accounted for a higher proportion than in 2018.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in the first 10 days of February 2019, domestic pork prices increased compared to the end of January 2019. On February 11, 2019, in the Northern region, pork prices ranged from 47,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, an increase of 3,000 VND/kg compared to the end of January 2019. Pork prices in the Central and Central Highlands regions were generally from 45,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to the end of January 2019.

The price of live pigs purchased by traders in key livestock farming areas in the South is currently averaging 48,000 - 53,000 VND/kg, an increase of 3,000 VND/kg compared to the end of January 2019. Compared to the same period in 2018, the price of live pigs is 25 - 30% higher, while the price of finished pork products is 7 - 15% higher. Compared to the end of 2018, the current price of pork has increased by 6 - 12%. It is known that the increase in pork prices is due to increased market demand while livestock farming companies are still closed. On the other hand, due to the increased demand for processing and consumption, production costs (breeds, materials) increased significantly compared to the same period in 2018. The supply of pork in 2019 provided by enterprises or processing farms accounted for a higher proportion than in 2018. In some localities, the supply from enterprises was up to 80-90%.

According to the General Statistics Office, in January 2019, buffalo and cattle farming was not favorable due to the impact of severe cold weather; pig and poultry farming generally developed stably, ensuring supply to meet consumption demand during the Lunar New Year. It is estimated that in January 2019, the buffalo herd nationwide decreased by 2.9% compared to the same period in 2018; the cow herd increased by 2.8%; the pig herd increased by 3.1%; and the poultry herd increased by 6.3%.
