The price of live pigs has continuously increased sharply in recent times, especially in the North, where it has exceeded 50,000 VND/kg. The Livestock Association predicts that the price of live pigs may reach 60,000 VND/kg this year.
The amount of pigs culled in August was nearly half that of July.
The Import-Export Department reported that African swine fever has shown signs of cooling down in many localities compared to the early stages of the outbreak.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also stated that African swine fever in many localities is gradually being controlled. The number of pigs culled in August was less than in previous months.
Accordingly, the number of pigs culled as of August 19 was about 475,700, nearly half that of July.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development estimated that the total number of pigs in the country in August 2019 decreased by about 18.5% compared to the same period in 2018.
The Import-Export Department recommends that farmers have taken steps to restore their herds at the end of the year but need to be extremely cautious, paying attention to disease prevention measures according to the instructions of local veterinary offices, and only increase their herds when they have ensured disease prevention conditions.
In the coming time, pork prices will continue to increase as China has stopped importing meat from the US and is tending to switch to imports from other countries, including Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the amount of pork left in the population is not much.
Therefore, the Vietnam Livestock Association forecasts that with this increase, the price of live pigs may reach 60,000 VND/kg this year.

Pig prices have increased sharply, with the North exceeding 50,000 VND/kg.
According to the Import-Export Department, in August, pig prices in localities across the country tended to increase sharply compared to the end of July due to limited supply while market demand increased.
In the North, in August, pig prices continued to remain high, with more and more localities seeing pig prices above 50,000 VND/kg, concentrated in the Red River Delta due to increasingly scarce supply.
In August, pig prices in the North averaged between 45,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.
Additionally, pig breeding prices in the market in the Northern provinces also increased significantly, standing at a high level, from 1.2 - 1.4 million VND/head, as people began to restock their herds when pig prices recently skyrocketed.
In the Central and Central Highlands regions, in August, prices also increased sharply compared to the end of July, rising by about 5,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, fluctuating around 35,000 - 47,000 VND/kg, with many places reaching the same level as the North.
However, on average, prices are still lower than in the Northern region by a few thousand VND. In the South Central and Central Highlands, the average pork price is at 39,000 - 41,000 VND/kg.
In the South, in August, prices increased by 6,000 - 8,000 VND/kg, fluctuating between 33,000 - 45,000 VND/kg.
